Philosophy –

In college, Carly found and developed a love for dressage which has since changed her view on riding and teaching. Horse and Rider Bio-mechanics quickly became a major interest. Over the past few years, Carly has studied and applied a bio-mechanical approach to both her teaching and riding. Her lessons concentrate on developing body awareness to create a balanced seat and heightened communication between horse and rider. Teamwork and fluid connection are greatly encouraged. Mary Wanless, Gillian Higgins, and Dr. Gerd Heuschmann have all been major influences in her bio-mechanical education as well as her own trainer and mentor, Holly Sands. Carly also works with riders who are timid, nervous, or struggle with confidence. She likes to incorporate her learning from Daniel Stewart in confidence building in and out of the ring. Carly’s focus for her students isn’t winning blue ribbons, it’s obtaining set goals and creating a lasting partnership with their horse.
Connected Horsemanship
Meet Our Team
Summerset’s owner and main instructor, Carly, found a passion for horses while she was in high school. Working at a local facility, she started lessons and instantly fell in love. She enrolled in the Equine program at Lake Erie College where she was introduced to Dressage and developed many of her foundation skills in horse care and how to teach others about horses. Graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in Equine Studies with double majors in Facility’s management and Teacher/Trainer in 2010, she started teaching lessons and working at a few facilities in Ohio. After moving back to the Dillsburg area in 2014, she worked and taught for two local facilities and decided she wanted to start her own program that focused on the biomechanics of horse and rider. Summerset was born in 2016 with the business fully operational in 2017. Since opening, Carly has worked hard to continue developing her teaching style and knowledge in equine and rider biomechanics, incorporating the importance of developing connection and partnership with the horse, moving away from more traditional program styles and competition programs.
Carly Amundsen
Owner/Trainer
Before becoming an assistant instructor, Morgan has been a student at Summerset since 2018. Growing up in the barn, she spent most of her time helping out alongside her riding lessons. From a young age, she was taught the importance of connected horsemanship with a strong emphasis on biomechanical riding, and continues to apply those principles in every equine interaction. Morgan currently attends Central Penn College with a major as an Occupational Therapy Assistant. She started mentoring under Carly in 2022 as she seeks to expand her knowledge and experience. In the same year, she started teaching at Summerset, helping riders find the same love for connected horsemanship as she has. Outside of lessons, Morgan enjoys working with her personal horse, Able.

Assistant Trainer
Jim is Carly’s father and is also Carly’s business partner here at Summerset. He is the CFO for the operation as well as the construction coordinator, assistant barn manager, handyman and the Official Summerset “Barn Dad” for all our riders here at Summerset. You’ll often find him helping out at the barn when he is not working at the Computer Center at Shippensburg University (his day job), seeing clients in his counseling private practice or mixing sound for some local bands.
